Free-Range vs Organic Eggs: What Is the Difference?
Hello dear friends. Here is the short answer: free-range eggs and organic eggs are not the same thing. Free range means the hens have access to the outdoors. Organic means the eggs are produced under organic rules and certified. And in Turkey, “köy yumurtası” (village eggs) is not a legal category at all.
If you shop for eggs in Istanbul, you will see all three phrases on egg boxes. It is not always clear which one means what. As a farm that keeps hens, we care about speaking plainly here. Let us look at what each one proves.
Three labels, three different claims
The three labels sound alike, yet each one says something different:
- Free-range eggs: the hens have access to an outdoor area. In the official system this is code 1 on the shell.
- Organic eggs: produced and certified under organic rules. On the shell this is code 0, and the pack can show the organic logo and certification details.
- Village eggs (köy yumurtası): a common phrase in Turkey, not a legal category. The Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has said that phrases like “village eggs” and “natural eggs” can mislead shoppers. That is one reason the farming method code became mandatory.
Free range does not mean organic
Free range does not mean organic; the two words describe different things. I love seeing hens walk in a field, scratch at the soil and feel the sun. But roaming alone does not make an egg organic. Organic production has its own rules for feed and care, and a certification body checks them. Which egg is more nutritious is a separate question; here we are looking at how eggs are produced.
What does yolk color prove?
Yolk color proves very little on its own. When we see a deep orange yolk, many of us think “this is a real farm egg”, do we not? In fact yolk color depends mostly on pigments in the hen’s feed. Corn, alfalfa and natural or synthetic color additives in feed can make a yolk darker. So the color proves neither the farming method nor organic status. The eye is won over by a beautiful color; the information is in the code on the shell.
What to check when you buy
Before the pretty words on the box, here is what you can check when you buy:
- The first digit on the shell: it shows the farming method.
- If the pack says organic: the organic logo and the certification details.
- The date on the pack and the storage advice.
- If you buy from a farmer: how the hens live and what they eat. Asking is your right.
What we sell at Şifa Köyü
At Şifa Köyü, our organic farm in Şile on the Black Sea coast of Istanbul, the product is called “Gezen Tavuk Yumurtası”, which means free-range eggs. Our hens roam the open field and eat the farm’s organic vegetables and grains. It makes us very happy to see them wander freely over the soil. I say it exactly as it is: we do not present them as certified organic eggs. Being open about this is part of our work. You can read the code on the shell of your own eggs.
The shop sifakoyu.com is in Turkish; current pack sizes and stock are on the product page. If you have a question about an order or about the eggs, write to us and we will get back to you. When you visit the farm, you can see our hens for yourself and spend a little time with them.
When you choose eggs, what do you look at first: the words on the box, the yolk or the code? I would be happy if you shared it with me. May your table always be full of good food. 🌿
