What Is a Sound Bath? First-Time Guide to What to Expect
Hello dear friends. 🙏 In this post I would like to explain what a sound bath is, but first let me tell you about a workshop we held outdoors. On the grass, everyone rolled out their own mat. First we sat, opened our arms and breathed together. Then everyone lay down and closed their eyes. I walked between them carrying a crystal bowl, so the sound came closer to some and drifted away from others.
It was a sunny, peaceful day. That is exactly what a sound bath is: a meditation where you lie down and listen to instruments. I play crystal singing bowls, Tibetan singing bowls, the gong and smaller shamanic instruments in turn. There is nothing you need to do; you only listen.
Sound is heard not only with the ears but also in the body, as vibration. We rarely allow ourselves to simply listen without doing anything, do we? When did you last give yourself a pause like this?
How does a sound bath unfold?
- We begin with a short breathing practice.
- You lie down on your mat, cover yourself if you like, and close your eyes.
- I play the instruments in turn. Sometimes the sound rises, sometimes it becomes so soft it is almost silent.
- At the end we sit for a few quiet minutes. Whoever wants to shares what they felt; you do not have to share.
Which instruments do I use?
Crystal singing bowls are made of quartz crystal and give a long, clear tone. Tibetan singing bowls are made of metal, and their sound is more layered and warm. The gong opens a wider field of sound. Alongside these I add rhythm and texture with small shamanic instruments. You are not expected to play anything.
At a crystal bowl gathering under a wooden shelter in the woods, we lined the instruments up in front of the mats. Some participants lay down, others listened sitting up.
What might you feel?
Some participants describe a deep stillness, some a state close to sleep, and some remember something they were not expecting. The experience differs from person to person, so I suggest coming without expectations. A sound bath is a practice of listening and resting. It is not a health service or a medical treatment.
Before you come
- Bring comfortable clothes and a mat. A light blanket is nice so you do not get cold.
- Try not to eat a heavy meal just before.
- Arriving a few minutes early gives you time to settle.
- If you are sensitive to sound, pregnant, or find lying down difficult, please tell us beforehand so we can arrange your place.
If the sound feels too much, you can open your eyes, sit up or move further from the instruments. You can pause at any moment.
Sound baths in Istanbul and Şile
We hold group workshops at Şifa Köyü, our organic farm in Şile on the Black Sea coast of Istanbul, or at a venue you choose. Write to us about the place, the date and the number of people, and we will plan it together. The instruments come with me. If you prefer to work one-to-one, the Crystal Bowl Sound Therapy session is shaped entirely around you and lasts about forty-five minutes. All of our work can be held in English as well as in Turkish.
I would be so happy if you shared how you felt after your first sound bath. May you rest peacefully inside the sound. With love. ✨

How long does a sound bath last?
For group workshops it depends on the type of workshop and the size of the group, and we tell you the length before the date. A one-to-one crystal bowl session lasts about forty-five minutes.
What should I bring?
Comfortable clothes, a mat and, if you like, a light blanket. I bring the instruments.
Can I take a break if the sound feels too much?
Yes. You can open your eyes, sit up or move away from the instruments; it is entirely up to you.
What is the difference between crystal bowls and Tibetan bowls?
Crystal bowls are made of quartz and give a clearer, longer tone. Tibetan bowls are metal and their sound is more layered.
