What Is an NLP Session and What Happens in One?

An NLP session is one-to-one coaching work for noticing your patterns of thinking, language and behaviour and adding new options to them. A few NLP methods chosen around your goal on the day are practised together, so each session takes its shape from you. It is coaching and personal awareness work and does not replace psychotherapy or medical treatment.

What Is an NLP Session and What Happens in One?

Hello dear friends. 🌿 Today I would like to answer a question I hear often: what is an NLP session, and what happens in one? The short answer is this. An NLP session is one-to-one work in which I use coaching methods to help you notice how you think, how you speak and how you behave. In a session we work with a few of these methods together. In this post I explain what a session is, how it unfolds and where we meet.

We all carry thought and communication patterns that have turned into habits over the years, do we not? Most of them repeat without our noticing. I see NLP as a calm way of reviewing those patterns. When did you last look at your own sentences from the outside?

What is an NLP session?

NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming. It is a set of coaching methods that help us notice the way we think, speak and behave, and add new options to those patterns. An NLP session is a one-to-one meeting in which these methods are chosen and practised around you. My aim is to give you room to step back a little and use those patterns more consciously. This work belongs to coaching and personal awareness; it does not replace psychotherapy or medical treatment.

What does NLP stand for and who created it?

NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming. The approach was developed in the United States in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. In the name, neuro refers to thinking and perception, linguistic to language, and programming to the thought and behaviour patterns that have become habits.

What happens in an NLP session?

In an NLP session we choose a few methods according to your wishes, needs and goals on the day, and we practise them together. That is why no two sessions follow the same script; each one takes its shape from you. You decide which subject we begin with. Afterwards, the aim is to look from a new place at how events affect you and at your own ways of thinking, speaking and behaving. You do not need any NLP training. The experience differs from person to person.

What do we focus on in NLP sessions?

Most often we talk about thought patterns, communication and goals. Here is what we focus on:

  • Noticing the thought patterns behind fear, anxiety, unhappiness or loneliness
  • Reviewing the way you communicate and trying out new options
  • Talking through what you could do to have more of the moments you enjoy in your relationships
  • Remembering skills and talents you are not using
  • Reflecting on your confidence and your goals
  • Setting practical steps for looking at your life from a more positive place

Some people ask whether an NLP session or coaching would suit their communication better. In an NLP session we look closely at the way you communicate and try new options together. In relationship and communication coaching, I usually suggest a programme of seven sessions in which you clarify your goals and plan your steps. We decide together at the first meeting which one suits you.

Where and how do we meet?

First you write to us, and we plan a short introductory call. On that call we look together at what you need. I do not set a number of sessions in advance, because it depends on your goal. We meet at Şifa Köyü (Healing Farm) in Şile, on Istanbul’s Asian side, or online if you prefer. Şifa Köyü is our farm, where the produce we grow from heirloom seeds holds EU-approved organic farming certification. Talking among the trees, with the smell of the soil around you, makes a lovely space for hearing your own voice. I hold sessions in English or Turkish. We will tell you the fee and the available times when you write.

Which sentence do you repeat to yourself most often? If you write to us with the one you notice, I would be so happy, and we can look at it together. Please be gentle with yourself. With love. 💛
